They Built Sixteen Outdoor Courts. Then It Rained.
The Community House has four permanent basketball courts. Every year, for the annual 3 on 3 tournament, staff spend the week building and painting temporary courts across the property to get to sixteen.
This year it rained.
So the whole tournament came inside. Every division — second grade through high school, plus the adult brackets — compressed into the gyms with games running back to back on every available floor. Several hundred players, one building, one day.
It still happened. That's the part worth saying out loud, because the alternative was cancelling a fundraiser that pays for a year of youth programming.
Why event work is priced differently than a scheduled shoot
A listing shoot is a controlled environment. You arrive, you assess the light, you adjust the blinds, you take the time you need. If a frame doesn't work you take it again.
An event has none of that.
There is no second take. A play happens once. Somebody's kid makes their first basket of the tournament and you either had the camera up or you didn't. Nobody is going to re-run it for you.
The conditions can change at eight in the morning. This shoot was booked for outdoor courts in August daylight, which is about the easiest light there is — bright, even, predictable. It became an indoor shoot instead, and a gym is close to the hardest environment in event photography. Low light. Mixed color temperature from overhead fixtures and windows fighting each other. Fast movement in every direction. And no flash, because you don't fire a strobe at kids mid-layup.
That's a different job than the one on the calendar, decided a few hours before tip-off, with no option to move the date.
You're covering a whole day, not a property. Games on multiple courts simultaneously, sidelines, the moments between. There's no shot list because you can't know in advance what's going to be worth photographing.
None of that makes event work better or harder in some abstract sense. It's just a different set of constraints, and it's why the pricing and the approach aren't the same.
What a nonprofit actually gets from a day like this
This is the part organizations tend to underestimate when they're deciding whether to hire someone at all.
The deliverable isn't a hero image for one social post. It's an archive.
A full set from one Saturday becomes the visual material for the next twelve months — newsletters, the annual report, grant applications, sponsor decks, next year's registration page, the website refresh nobody has budgeted for yet. Organizations that run a lot of programming and photograph almost none of it end up making their case with stock images or phone snapshots from three years ago.
One well-covered event solves that for a year.
For The Community House specifically, every dollar the tournament raises goes back into youth recreation programming serving more than 3,000 kids across Hinsdale and the surrounding communities. The photos are part of how that gets funded again next year.
